First of all, I don’t recommend 12th class students to start upsc preparation right now.
Because you need to learn what upsc is all about and you need to start it with right guidance at the right age. But it’s not that right age.
First, IAS exam is not for students who tend to memorize study materials, instead of understanding the concepts.
Whether you’re an arts, commerce or science student. Now it may be good for you to memorize the study material and regurgitate them in your answer sheet without understanding any real world apply knowledge.
But upsc requires different approach. And you need to become mature enough to learn that approach.
So, here’s I talk about basics of upsc and some tips that how can yourself for your upcoming upsc preparation instead how to prepare upsc.
Introduction of Civil Services Examination
UPSC is a government organization. It is created for to hire civil servants to serve the country. Civil services include a list of 26 government jobs from IAS to IFS .
To hire candidates, UPSC Conducts civil services examinations each and every year.
So, to become an civil servant of this country. you have to qualify the civil services examination by upsc, minimum an undergraduate (including open university) degree and there is no entrance exam.
Structure of civil services exam:
- Interview (another name: personality test)
Prelims is objective type questions based exam and mains is written exam.
Once you cracked prelims, you can write mains. Then you cracked mains, you can attend personality test (aka Interview)
After passing Personality test, you will be short listed for a civil services post based on your scores or merit.
IAS _ Indian Administrative Service is considered to be ultimate post, to ‘Become an IAS‘ you need to score more marks than other candidates.
Here’s a popular query, i mostly got asked by school students.
Do upsc takes into account of 12th class and graduation score?
A BIG NO.
UPSC don’t care about your graduation and 12th class marks. They only evaluate the marks you earn in upsc.
And another question aspirants asks me:
Is it good idea after 12th class taking B.A. Arts in any humanity subject (history, geography, economics and political science) good?
But I see, many students usually in North Indian states doing this practice.
I have already said, in my upsc back up plan post is that upsc is unpredictable, within 3 years of your graduation, you can’t assume what will happen?
Life is fun. Diversifying your career option is more than settling on one thing.
So, the only one thing you need to do as 12th class student
In civil services examination, the most important thing is reading newspaper.
The importance of current affairs in upsc exam increases year by year.
And an ias topper Munish Sharm who claims, “I did not study much, I just read the newspaper”
So, reading newspaper is the important as well as hardest part too.
As a 12th class the one thing you can do now as a starting point for your upsc preparation is reading newspaper.
Avoid cinema, politics, and other entertaining sections in newspaper.
Read all of my previous posts that teach you how to read newspaper:

It is a good idea to start building some good habits and attitude instead of starting any serious preparation such as joining a coaching institute at this point.
