Do you believe that you will be qualify for upcoming civil services personality test or Are you qualified?
Are you stressed?
Are you confused where to start?
Then here’s some guidance that addresses some most common queries among aspirants.
Also, don’t forget to share this article with your friends who just started their upsc interview preparation.
Why they conduct upsc interview
Upsc interview also called personality test. As it name suggests, this interview basically conduct to not assess your academic records but your personality by asking you a different set of questions and giving you enormous amount of stress and pressure.
What type of questions they will ask
They will ask anything from national issue to international issue that a well matured person should know, About you, questions from general studies and optional subject that you write in mains and anything under the sun.
Can I give upsc interview in my native language
Yes. You can attend interview in Hindi, Tamil or any language you want. But make sure that you mentioned your interview language medium in DAF previously.
Also, if you write mains in English, you can still give interview in another language.
There are many questions regarding hobbies among aspirants. Some GuruTechy readers even mailed me that what hobby to choose.
In my opinion watching T.V., Listening music are not hobbies at all. I recommend you to read this thread by Bhavesh Mishra.
If you really have a good hobby that you can proudly talk about. Then include it in your DAF. Otherwise leave it blank.
For example Nitin sangwan has more than 1 hobby and see how he collects information and take notes on these hobbies here.
You don’t need to have multiple hobbies like Nitin sangwan. But make sure that you learn some basics about your hobbies.
Does your working profile matters
It depends. If you have gap after 1 or 2 years of your graduation. You can tell that you spent your time for preparation.
But if you’re 24 or 25, you just can’t get away by saying that you spent all the years after graduation on upsc preparation.
Because as a future civil servant, they would expect you to be responsible. So, you should mention that where you did work, even if you worked in a grocery store.
Does it matter where you studied and how much you scored
There is a common belief among many that coming from a Tier – 1 college with good percentile will help.
Actually, the reverse is true. If you’re coming from a popular place like IIT with good marks. The panel would like to ask you more tougher and harder questions to test whether you’re really smart or just a book junkie.
So, generally your marks and college is not really important. But in some rare case, some panel members would make you stress by pondering your low marks and college. But only in rare case.
Remember qualifying for upsc interview itself is harder and many top-tier college students couldn’t do that. So, it doesn’t really matter where you studied and how much you scored.
What is the best book for upsc interview
There is no best and perfect book for interview preparation. Instead it is best to read Toppers interview transcript online.
Many toppers publish online their interview transcript on their blog. Find and read them. My favorite is Nitin sangwan’s interview transcript, read here.
Also there are some personality guides and books that helps to improve personality.
You can research online for any personality guides.
But I recommend some books I read that helps to improve personality and positive mindset:
Though these books have no connection regarding upsc interview preparation. Reading them will be a best inspiration for ias aspirants.
Note: I planning to create a toppers interview transcript ebook. Soon, I will publish online. So, if you’re interested, just subscribe GuruTechy newsletter. I will send you the ebook inbox.
How much marks required to pass upsc interview
Actually the question itself is wrong. Similar to mains, interview is a cut off based exam and the cut off will change each and every year according to the competition.
In my analysis many candidates score between 140 to 180 marks in range. Few only scores highest marks 200 or above 200.
Note: Total is 275 marks
What is the dress code:
There is no a serious checklist when it comes to dress code. As usual, it is enough to wear a formal shirt, pant and polished shoes. Avoid shinny shirts.
For girls, traditional sari or salwar is enough.
Are giving mock interviews are worth:
Einstein once said,
The only source of knowledge is experience.
You can read all the books in market that teach you how to preform well in upsc personality test. But attending mock interviews is the only way to gain experience.
When is upsc interview held
